Crisis Coordination Centre Information Officer

The client has been running their own business in a separate field for over a decade but had just recently completed their Bachelor of Criminology. The role she was interested in was an entry-level position that would open up a plethora of opportunities for a career in her chosen field. The role required a range of specific duties and responsibilities that the client had little to no direct experience in. Thus, it was my responsibility to highlight the client’s transferable skills and abilities in alignment with the role. To apply for this role, the client was required to provide a statement of one page only outlining their skills and experience and ability to meet the following requirements of the role;

  • Ability to work in a high pressure, fast-paced environment with rapidly changing priorities
  • Well-developed written ability to write accurate and concise information products in a timely manner
  • Ability to be trained in, and perform the role of, the hotline operator
  • Ability to work in a close team environment
  • Experience or qualifications in national security or emergency management are desirable but not essential

To put together this application, I engaged the client in a discussion about her transferable skills and experience and extracted a specific example that demonstrated each of the requirements. I ensured that she provided me with a clear Situation, Task, Action and Result for each example to enable me to put together the responses using the STAR model. Utilising a range of examples from both the client’s academic studies and professional history, I was able to present a strong application that will place the client in the optimal position to secure the role, and embark on her new career.
