QLD Police – Inspector Key Selection Criteria

The client has been working his way up the ranks in QLD Police and is looking to take the next step into an Inspector position. The position of Inspector encompassed a more global approach to his current position and asked that applicants be able to address a range of key accountabilities, including providing quality leadership, developing and implementing strategies, consulting and liaising with Government and Non-Government stakeholders, and managing and undertaking projects on behalf of Regional, Command and Divisional Management. The application required that the client address five Key Selection Criteria, at no more than 250 words, as follows;

Shapes Strategic Direction

  • Inspires a sense of purpose and direction
  • Focuses strategically
  • Harnesses information and opportunities
  • Shows judgement, intelligence and common sense

Achieves Results

  • Builds organisational capability and responsiveness
  • Marshals professional expertise
  • Steers and implements change and deals with uncertainty
  • Ensures closure and delivers on intended results

Cultivates Productive Working Relationships

  • Nurtures internal and external relationships
  • Facilitates cooperation and partnerships
  • Values individual differences and diversity
  • Guides, mentors and develops people

Exemplifies Personal Drive and Integrity

  • Demonstrates professionalism and probity
  • Engages with risk and shows personal courage
  • Commits to action
  • Displays resilience
  • Demonstrates self-awareness and a commitment to personal development

Communicates with Influence

  • Communicates clearly
  • Listens, understands and adapts to audience
  • Negotiates persuasively

Engaging the client in a discussion regarding times when he felt he had met the above criteria, I was able to draw out information which demonstrated that he could provide examples against each criterion. Teasing out the details of a clear Situation, Task, Action and Result for each example allowed me to provide clear evidence that he could fulfil the duties of the role. Putting together a draft for the client, I contacted him once more to clarify some details in regards to police jargon which I felt would strengthen the document, and after a short discussion I was able to present a strong Key Selection Criteria which I am confident demonstrates the client’s ability to excel in the desired role.
